What can be disposed of in Glass Recycling Bins?

Before recycling any glass, it needs to be empty and give a quick rinse - leftover liquid can contaminate other recyclables which may mean they aren't recycled. Put lids and caps back on - this reduces the chance of them getting lost during the sorting process as they can be recycled separately.

The Why

The Benefits of Glass Recycling

By recycling glass, you're helping to reduce emissions of harmful gases that are normally produced when it is manufactured. This includes sulphur dioxide, which contributes to climate change, and nitrogen oxide, which is especially bad for health. When glass is recycled and reused for new bottles and jars, less energy is needed to make them, and the associated air pollution of glass production is reduced by 20%.

The How

How Glass is Recycled

  1. First, the glass is crushed and any non-glass items that are mixed in are removed
  2. The crushed glass is then mixed with raw materials to colour and/or enhance properties
  3. The mixture is melted in a furnace
  4. Finally, the hot glass is moulded or blown into new bottles or jars
