HURN RECYCLING

General Waste Collection

At Hurn Recycling, we provide reliable, flexible general waste collection for businesses of all sizes across Dorset.

QUESTION

What is General Waste?

Unfortunately, not everything can be recycled. General waste refers to everyday non-recyclable materials generated by businesses and households. This includes items such as certain plastics, ceramics, and non-recyclable packaging materials.

Alongside our recycling services, we provide a dedicated general waste collection service for businesses, as well as skip hire and event waste services.Although general waste cannot be recycled, it doesn't have to end up in landfill. The waste we collect is recovered through energy-from-waste facilities wherever possible, providing a more sustainable solution for your business.

LEGISLATION

Businesses’ Responsibilities for General Waste Disposal

Businesses have a responsibility to store general waste safely and securely, and to keep waste to a minimum by reusing and recycling wherever possible. You should also be able to present a waste transfer note (WTN) on request.

Below is a summary of businesses’ general waste responsibilities:

  • Keep waste to a minimum by doing everything you reasonably can to prevent, reuse, recycle, or recover waste (in that order).
  • Sort and store waste safely and securely.
  • Complete a waste transfer note for each load of waste that leaves your premises.
  • Check if your waste carrier is registered to dispose of waste.
  • Do not allow the waste carrier to dispose of your waste illegally.

Further information can be found on the UK Government website.

THE PROCESS

What Happens to Your General Waste

When materials cannot be recycled, they are processed at Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities, generating electricity from residual waste. This maximises resource recovery, reduces landfill reliance, and keeps waste moving up the sustainability hierarchy.
1.

Collection

Not all waste can be recycled, but that doesn't mean it has to go to landfill. Our zero-to-landfill general waste collection service ensures general waste is recovered through specialist treatment processes that generate energy, helping businesses reduce waste, lower their environmental impact, and support a more circular economy.

2.

Sorting & Recovery

At the treatment facility, waste is carefully inspected and sorted to recover recyclable materials such as metals, plastics, cardboard, and wood. The remaining non-recyclable waste is then sent for energy recovery at an Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility.

Energy Recovery & Disposal

Following the recovery of recyclable materials, any remaining waste is sent to an Energy-fromWaste (EfW) facility, where it is used to generate electricity. Through this process, we ensure that the waste we collect is diverted from landfill and managed in the most sustainable way possible.
