It is best for the environment as well as your wallet to keep glass separate for recycling. Glass collections are more cost-effective than getting rid of it as mixed recycling or general waste.

This service compliments our Dry Mixed Recycling Service. We provides both 240-litre or 360-litre bin containers, ideal for any type of business.

How to Recycle Glass

Empty and give a quick rinse - leftover liquid can contaminate other recyclables which may mean they aren't recycled. Put lids and caps back on - this reduces the chance of them getting lost during the sorting process as they can be recycled separately.

What Glass items can be recycled?

  • Bottles of any colour, e.g. wine, beer, spirits
  • Jars, e.g. sauces, jam, baby food
  • Non-food bottles, e.g. perfume, aftershave, face creams

What Glass items cannot be recycled?

  • Ceramics, e.g. crockery, earthenware
  • Drinking glasses (as they are often hardened glass)
  • Glass cookware, e.g. Pyrex, microwave plates
  • Light bulbs and tubes
  • Vases

The most common contaminants found in glass recycling loads are black bags, drinking glasses, crockery, food waste, food-soiled packaging, sanitary waste (e.g. paper towels, napkins) and wine coolers. This waste is best collected through our general waste service instead.

The Benefits of Glass Recycling

Glass is one of the only materials that can be recycled infinitely and without the loss of quality as opposed to materials such as paper/cardboard and plastics. Only by segregating glass from other materials you can ensure they are recycled properly and to a high standard.

By recycling glass, you're helping to reduce emissions of harmful gases that are normally produced when it is manufactured. This includes sulphur dioxide, which contributes to climate change, and nitrogen oxide, which is especially bad for health. When glass is recycled and reused for new bottles and jars, less energy is needed to make them, and the associated air pollution of glass production is reduced by 20%.

How Glass is Recycled

  • First, the glass is crushed and any non-glass items that are mixed in are removed
  • The crushed glass is then mixed with raw materials to colour and/or enhance properties
  • The mixture is melted in a furnace
  • Finally, the hot glass is moulded or blown into new bottles or jars
